Yes, it is "perplexing", perhaps "bizarre", but certainly not "unbelievable". Standing waves are quite common in rotary fluid dynamics. It looks like the wave patterns seen in Earth's circumpolar jet stream--only more symmetric, probably due to lack of oceans and continents below.
